Building confident, connected, and effective parenting

Understanding Parenting Interventions

Parenting is one of the most important and challenging roles a person will take on, and even the most devoted caregivers encounter situations where they feel stuck, frustrated, or unsure. Evidence-based parenting interventions are structured approaches, grounded in decades of research, that equip parents with practical skills to strengthen the parent-child relationship, manage challenging behaviors, and promote healthy child development.

Research consistently demonstrates that parenting practices play a central role in shaping children's behavioral, emotional, and social outcomes. Behavioral parent training programs — recognized by the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the CDC — can increase positive parenting behaviors, improve parent-child interactions, and reduce behavior problems in children.

Who Can Benefit

  • Parents of young children (ages 2–7) experiencing tantrums, defiance, aggression, or difficulty following directions

  • Families navigating the challenges of ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, or emotional regulation difficulties

  • Parents seeking to strengthen the parent-child bond after periods of stress, transition, or disruption

  • Caregivers who want to develop a more confident, consistent, and effective approach to discipline

  • Families in blended, foster, or adoptive configurations who need support in building secure relationships

Evidence-Based Approaches

Parent Management Training (PMT) is an evidence-based approach that helps caregivers build practical skills to support positive behavior and reduce challenging behaviors like tantrums, defiance, and impulsivity. Grounded in behavioral science, PMT focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship while creating clear expectations, consistent routines, and effective responses to behavior. Parents learn how to use positive reinforcement, set limits with confidence, and respond calmly and consistently, helping children develop self-regulation, cooperation, and confidence over time.

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is a research-backed, parent-based treatment designed to help children struggling with anxiety, OCD, and related challenges. Rather than working directly with the child, SPACE empowers parents to make small but powerful changes in how they respond to anxiety. By learning to offer supportive, validating responses while gradually reducing accommodations (like excessive reassurance or avoidance), parents can help their child build resilience, face fears, and gain confidence—often without the child needing to attend sessions.

Additional evidence-based frameworks, including behavioral parent training principles drawn from programs such as the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program, may be incorporated depending on the family's needs. These approaches share a foundation in social learning theory and focus on creating a safe, engaging environment; building positive learning opportunities; using assertive (not aggressive) discipline; holding realistic expectations; and supporting parental self-care.

What families experience

Research shows that the use of empirically supported parenting strategies promotes adaptive child behavior and more consistent caregiving practices. This, in turn, contributes to improved family organization, communication, and emotional climate.
